"Now I am come to the arts and I shall begin from distillation
An invention of later times,
A wonderful thing to be praised beyond the power of men;
Not that which the vulgar and skilled men use,
For they do but corrupt and destroy what is good;
But that which is done by skillful artists.
Let one that loves learning and to search natures secrets enter upon this;
For a dull fellow will never attain this art of distilling."
 Dellla Porta, 1589

Distillation:  Mass transfer process in which the components of a single feed stream are separated based on their distribution between the vapor and liquid phases.
